Question: Is being so deeply immersed that one doesn't hear alarms indicative of entering a deep ghost realm (guidao)?
Response by Master Qingliang Yue: Such depth reflects a state of deep stupor. The ghost realm has various levels. The notorious realm of hungry ghosts is rare, with the majority experiencing what's known as the ordinary ghost realm.
The ordinary ghost realm involves reliving past experiences, essentially living in the past. To grasp what entering the ghost realm feels like, consider your life’s experiences from childhood onwards. In the ghost realm, you’ll revisit these moments, living within those past contexts.
Therefore, the ghost realm is not as terrifying as it may seem. The priority is to foster a habit of meditation since life in the ghost realm revolves around memories. By recalling meditation experiences when you find yourself in the ghost realm, you may find a way to move beyond it. Hence, establishing an empirical practice is crucial.
Question: Why do tears occur during meditation, and what should I take into account?
Response from Master Qingliang Yue: Tears during meditation indicate you’re in a state of stillness, characterized by yin energy, leading to reactions like crying or increased saliva production. This is a sign of deepening tranquility. To navigate through, intensify your focus and dedication to practice, which will help you transcend these physical responses.
Question: Can we maintain awareness of our thoughts and actions at all times in daily life?
Response from Master Qingliang Yue: Absolutely, it’s both feasible and beneficial. Keeping a constant vigil on your thoughts and actions not only eases the process of observing the mind (guanxin) but also smooths the path into deep meditation. The main challenge in achieving deep meditation is often a lack of thought awareness. While many practitioners can reach a state of serene sitting where physical sensations fade, progressing beyond this point is hindered by difficulties in continuous mind monitoring. Regularly practicing mindfulness enhances the ease of advancing through this stage. Once this barrier is crossed, entering fundamental Samadhi becomes naturally effortless, akin to drifting downstream.
Therefore, fostering perpetual mindfulness is key: remain conscious of your thoughts, discern your mind’s activities, and persistently monitor your mental state.
